Most games in the market usually have a deep lore and story that drives the games. Take for instance the Metal Gear series, or Halo, or Half Life, which can fill up a small library with their lore. Then there are games with absolutely no story. Pac-Man eats dots, you just build things in Minecraft, and Counter Terrorists and Terrorists just want to kill each other. For a long time, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds aka PUBG fell into the latter category. You and 99 others are dropped on an island, you find equipment, and the last one to survive wins (and presumably gets a chicken dinner). With Season 4 of PUBG PC on the horizon, the developers have dropped a cinematic trailer that gives us some insight into the background for the game. Boy is it bleak…
The trailer starts off in 1965 and we are shown a young boy surviving the bombing of his home island, Erengel. He hid and managed to survive, but later realised that he was the lone survivor of the attack. “I was the first lone survivor of Erengel. But I would not be the last,” he says before adding, “The island showed a scared boy that he could be a survivor. That’s what I want from you.” The action then fast-forwards by many years where we see the boy (now a man) watching players battle it out in a match on multiple screens. He then says, “Welcome to my battlegrounds.”
The cinematic trailer was launched to promote Season 4 of PUBG PC. The update will be made available for players on July 24, while console players will get it later this summer. As part of the update, Erangel will have a revamped look with new buildings, terrain and graphics. You can learn more about the update here.
